HOLLYOAKS STAR GERARD MCCARTHY TO PERFORM INTIMATE RAT PACK GIG FOR CHARITY

    By Tina Calder

HOLLYOAKS star Gerard McCarthy is taking to the stage tonight (FRI) in aid of charity for a Rat Pack Night.
The Belfast born actor, who plays cross-dressing, bi-sexual Kris in the hit Channel 4 soap, is performing an intimate swing gig in aid of the Rape Crisis & Sexual Abuse Centre.
Gerard, 25, a professionally trained singer and dancer, will belt out hits from the swing years from Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jnr and many other artists from the era.
He will emulate Robbie Williams sell-out Swing When Your Winning tour when he sings hits such as Mack The Knife, Mr BoJangles and Luck Be A Lady from the musical Guys and Dolls.
Speaking last night Gerard said he was very happy to give his support to such an important charity.
He said: “I found out about the Rape Crisis Centre through a friend of mine who fundraises for them and she told me of their ongoing funding crisis and valuable work.
“It’s such a pity that this subject is so taboo that facilities such as the Rape Crisis Centre are often shunned by people with public profiles because it is not a ‘fashionable’ charity to be involved with.
“The work the Rape Crisis Centre does is invaluable to society and I am only too pleased to put my name to the support of such a worthy cause”.
The Rat Pack Night will take place tonight at the 3 C’s club in Belfast city centre where Gerard will surprise guests who have dressed up in the era for the occasion with their favourite swing songs.
But the star, who is no stranger to the stage, having performed in Saturday Night Fever and many other hit musicals said he’s a little nervous about the gig.
Gerard admitted: “I only agreed to do this gig at the weekend but I’m very excited about it. However, at the same time I’m a little nervous, to sing songs by some of the most amazing artists to ever live is always going to have a little pressure”.
Joining Gerard is 5FM DJ Paul McKenna who has also donated his time free of charge. Paul will be keeping the music going until late.
Eileen Calder, Co-Director of the Rape Crisis & Sexual Abuse Centre, said she was encouraged by both Gerard and Paul’s commitment to help the charity.
She added: “It’s not often we find celebrities who are willing to give up their time to come to our events let alone perform at them. In the past people like Christine Bleakley, Mike Nesbitt, Lynda Bryans and Myleene Klass have all given their time and we are grateful to each and every one of them.
“Not forgetting of course the ongoing efforts of fundraising volunteers of the Centre who organise events like these which help to provide much needed funds for the Centre and help to keep our doors open to survivors of sexual violence. Thanks Jacqui for The Rat Pack night”.
Admission tonight is £4, doors open 8pm and guests can join the casino, enter the ballot and many are even getting dressed in character for the evening.

    NEIGHBOURS STAR AT KATY DALY'S

    By Andrea Clarke

NEIGHBOURS star Kyal Marsh is swapping Ramsay Street for Strabane this weekend when he appears at Katy Daly’s Beach Party.
The actor, who plays Boyd Hoyland in the popular soap, recently filmed his final scenes in Australia and is stopping off at the Beach Party this Saturday July 28 before pursuing acting opportunities in the UK.
“ I want to go over to the UK for a while to see if I can do some work there - just do some pantomimes”, he said.
“Also, maybe in pilot season at the end of this year, I might head over to LA and try to get an agent there.
“As you know, the English are massive fans of Neighbours, so hopefully there’s a lot of work to be had”.
Since joining Neighbours in 2002, Kyal has appeared in commercials and has modelled for catalogues including Kmart, Target and Fosseys.
In February, producers announced they were not renewing Kyal’s contract and Boyd will make his final appearance later this summer.
He said: “My contract came to an end and the producers pretty much just felt that my character had come to an end, which was fair enough.
“I’m surprised that he’s lasted as long as he has. When I first started, I didn’t think I was going to last a few months, but it ended up being five years.
“I’ve had a good run and I’m happy for the time that I’ve had here, but I’m actually really looking forward to moving on and doing something else as well”.
Joining Kyal at Katy Daly’s is DJ Pele aka Graham Perry.
Having already worked with the biggest clubs around the MED, including Futures nightclub in Corfu, Es Paradis in Ibiza and in Mallorca BCM, DJ Pele has built a reputation as one of the top club DJs in Europe.
He has also DJ’d for the largest youth holiday company in Europe Club 18-30, which he has worked with for 15 years in Great Britain on all UK winter tours and Winter Weekend Reunions, plus all the 13 resorts they fly to.
He was also featured in SKY TV’s Uncovered series.

Troy Pierce set to make Belfast techno crazy

    By Kellie Cunningham

TECHNO legend Troy Pierce will play Zoo at The Stiff Kitten this Friday, July 20.
Brought up in sleepy Indiana with the cornfields as a backdrop and the sounds of Midwest house and techno Richie Hawlin, Jeff Miles,Derrick Carter and D-Winn, Troy wanted a bit more.
After 10 years in the Big Apple rot was setting in he had had enough of struggling on the ladder of the minimal techno scene, playing to a handful of nostalgic fans fighting the disappearance of their sound that had scene better days.
Berlin beaconed Troy. As one third of RUN STOP RESTORE (along with fellow Berliner Magda and Canadian Marc Houle) their first release, “The Geometry E.P.” (Minus number 20) as well as their contribution to the Post Office number 2 compilation, have both been well received.
After relocating to Berlin, the pieces are falling into place, playing BEATSTREET, the after-hours spot in Berlin, EGG and THE END in London and an exclusive live p.a. at VOLUME in New York for Minus. He is also joining Minus on the upcoming European tour with Magda and Richie Hawtin due to begin at the end of September.
Take a chance to see him for yourself as he takes on Belfast this Friday alongside supreme residents Psycatron at The Stiff Kitten.

Doors open at 10pm £7 before 11pm or else £9.
